How to Crate Train Your Dog the Right Way

Crate training is starting to catch on with many dog owners. In order to crate train your dog with success you need to really learn how to do it. Without knowing all of the facts, a person could really just wasting their time and doing the opposite of training a dog. Crate training a dog does not come instinctively.

Firstly, you need to find out the what size crate you need to properly crate train your dog. There are several different sizes with good reason. Even though your first instinct may be to give your dog a large sized crate so that it has room to relax, which is the last thing you want to do. The exception is if you have one of the larger breeds of dogs. The perfect crate is one that is tall enough for the dog to not hit its head and long enough where it is able to spin around. Too a big of a crate will not help the dog learn.

A large component of this instruction is that you will gain a far greater grasp on the housebreaking method. If you keep your dog in a crate that’s too large, it will never be housebroken because it can easily go to the bathroom on one end and lie down on the other end. Dogs will not urinate where they lie down. Use a small crate so that your dog will try not to go to the bathroom inside the crate.

After you let your dog out of the crate, take him or her immediately outside to the special spot. Compliment your dog for doing something good and go on with your day. Food and water shouldn’t be put in the crate and the dog shouldn’t be left in the crate for extended lengths of time.

Do a simple check by running your hand along the sides, to makes sure there are no edges where the dog can be hurt by running into them. If a dog is crated for too long or if it feels stressed, it will look for ways to escape. You want to avoid your dog getting scratched up and maybe winding up with infections. Dog training is not a simple matter. In order for you, the trainer, to do it the right way, you must put the safety and health of the dog first, before you cause it injury.

you should never use the crate to punish your dog or puppy. The crate is not the place for punishing your dog. Making your dog feel anxiety about the crate is not how to train it. You want that crate to be its comfort zone or its little den. As long as your dog senses that the location provides safety and security, he won’t be bothered staying there while you’re out. Simply continue training your dog and soon you’ll realize that the crate is the greatest thing to come into your lives.

Not everyone uses the same methods when it comes to house training your dog. Not every dog will respond the same way to the methods being used. If you find one method of training not working after a while, the best thing to do is to move on to a another method. Do this to assure you receive the greatest benefit out of training your dog.

Whatever you are trying to train them to do, you should always try the most popular methods first. This is due to the face that they work in most scenarios. As long as you are getting the proper sized crate, keeping it clean, and making sure that it is safe and secure, there is nothing wrong with this training method. There are those people out there who will say crate training is not how to house train a dog. They don’t realize that dogs instincts are to live in a den and they feel more comfortable in a small space.
