Tips to Control Dog Barking
Sometimes your dog may start barking because he gets overexcited to see you, or really wants your attention, or is barking to protect you-these are all minor barking problems, and you should be able to stop them with a simple command to quiet down. If your dog suffers from any of these issues listed below, you should work with the dog on correcting these barking problems. Unfortunately, excessive barking is a problem that takes some work to solve.
Here are several examples of common bad barking behaviors-use whatever tips work for you, depending on which of these dog barking problems your dog has.
- To correct the dog barking caused when your dog spots another dog or person outside the yard you will need to be able to block the view of the outside from your dog. If you can move your dog behind a solid fence you will have blocked that view. If you don’t have any fenced areas, try putting your dog on a lead and keeping him in a part of the yard with no outside view. If your dog stays indoors, keep the curtains closed to block his view.
- One method of solving the problem of your dog barking in response to neighborhood dogs, is by taking the matter into your own hands-literally. For instance, as soon as your dog begins to bark, put your hand over his mouth and hold his mouth shut until he has completely stopped resisting. Since he will not enjoy this at all, you will need to grab ahold of his collar to keep him from moving away. Spraying him in the face from a small spray bottle of water will startle your dog, and make him stop barking for the moment. A can of pebbles is also good for startling your dog into stopping the barking for a bit. These tricks all work to temporarily stop the barking for the time you are using them. At the same time you stop the barking, you should also command your dog to “stop barking” or “be quiet”-whatever command you have chosen. The goal of the training is for your dog to stop barking just by using your vocal command.
- In order to correct a dog that barks for reasons of being stressed and feeling insecure it requires a lot of attention from you through training, exercising and playing with your dog. By keeping your dog more active and happy, his anxiety level should go down enough to alleviate his problem barking.
- To correct the dog barking problems cause by a bored or lonely dog, also will require increase attention by you in the way of exercising and playing and training your dog. Obviously if your dog is left alone most of the time and doesn’t get enough playtime and attention from you he is more likely to have this type of barking problem. It is wise to give your dog at least the hour and a half minimum daily exercise time he needs.
- Correct the problem of your own dog barking for attention by saying a firm “no” and then turning your back to him and ignoring him for a few minutes. You should not let your dog get away with bullying you. The reason for this, besides the annoyance of a steadily barking dog, is that you are the Alpha dog. Your dog will not give you the respect you need to be the Alpha dog, if he is able to bully you around with his barking. It is essential for training your dog that you alone are the Alpha dog
In addition to these correction techniques, you can find some bark prevention collars available at your pet store. The Citronella oil collar works through the activation of a fine mist sprayed into your dog’s face when he starts barking. The second collar works through emitting a very high pitched sound that is activated by the dog barking . Each of these collars works to stop the dog from barking due to his aversion to either the smell or the noise.
There is even a collar that prevents barking through the application of electric shock. Some people have had good success using these when other methods have failed.
