The German Shepherd Dog, or Alsatian, is a comparatively modern breed of dog, dating from 1899. As its name suggests, the breed has its origins in Germany and was bred as a herding dog. Today, the breed is most well known as a police dog. Because of its intelligence, obedience and protective nature, it is used by police forces around the world. Although, the German Shepherd is still used as an extremely effective working dog, it is also a wonderfully popular family pet.

Some dogs are more prone to the digging trait than others but basically it comes down to the individual animals and their preferences. Although if you are choosing a dog and are concerned about damage from digging you should stay away from certain breeds due to their extreme tendency towards the digging trait. Terriers in general are diggers and Huskies and Malamutes are also known for the habit.

Aside from genetic predisposition, there are many reasons why dogs dig.
- Boredom. Dogs tend to find ways to keep themselves buys if they are not getting enough interaction and attention
- Lack of exercise. Often dogs with excess nervous energy find alternate ways to burn it off.
- Escape. Some dogs simply want to get out; even if they are not mistreated they are always plotting an escape.
- Separation anxiety. In dogs prone to this condition often digging is a way to get out of the confines of the yard to try and find you.
I live in a small town and we were shocked when it was discovered that the locally owned and operated pet store, was selling puppy mill puppies. The store has since closed but if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere.
Third, do not buy a puppy that is younger than 8 weeks old. This is the minimum age when a puppy is ready to be separated from its mother, if you want a healthy and well adjusted dog. If you have your heart set on a puppy that is too young, arrange to return and pick him up when he is old enough.
Temperament and Character
Unfortunately, in some quarters, the breed has a reputation for biting humans and attacking smaller dogs. However, reputable sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Veterinary Medical Association, argue that there is no accurate way to determine the bite rate of breeds, because of inaccurate reports and mixed breeding. Moreover, studies have shown that smaller dogs are much more likely to bite than larger dogs. Of course, due to the fact that German Shepherds are popular pets and often used for protection, the statistical analysis, on which claims of aggression in German Shepherds is based, is flawed.
